Bunkering
Malta’s location makes it an ideal point for a bunker call because the island straddles the main Mediterranean shipping lanes. A call at Malta offers the advantage of no deviation from a planned voyage.
Bunkering has become increasingly active over the last few years or so due to the development of an oil terminal at Marsaxlokk by EVOS. This company, operating four safe berths for vessels up to 120,000 dwt, offers a number of facilities including making and breaking bulk for long or short hauls respectively, and other value-added activities like blending and treatment, among others. The terminal has a total storage capacity of over 600,000 cubic metres in a number of tanks varying in capacity from 5,000 cubic metres to 35,700 cubic metres and as a result handles a variety of products.
Bunkers at competitive prices can be supplied offshore by means of dedicated barges at five main locations around the island, catering for most weather conditions. Within the Grand Harbour, bunkers may be un/loaded ex-pipeline at Flagstone Wharf, the Deep Water Quay, and Ras Hanżir Dolphins. At the Port of Marsaxlokk bunkers may be un/loaded from San Lucian Terminals.
Offshore Bunkering
Offshore Bunkering operations are allocated in various areas around Malta. Vessels will be allocated a relevant area by the Ports and Yachting Directorate on arrival. Five different areas around the island are available, and the area is allocated depending on weather conditions. A fleet of 17 bunker barges, which are owned by different private companies, operates within this service sector.
Other services at the Ports in Malta include conveyances, crew change and surveying.
